Markus Wheaton injury: Steelers WR could return for Week 9

The Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver hasn’t been ruled out for the team’s Week 9 matchup.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton has not been ruled out and could return from injury in Week 9, according to Scott Brown of ESPN. Wheaton sustained a broken pinkie finger in Week 4 and hasn't played since, but he is being evaluated at this time.

Wheaton has been ruled out of the past three games early in the week, so the fact that there hasn't been a definitive statement as of Tuesday is probably a sign that he'll return soon. Whether or not he can return for the team's Week 9 matchup against the New England Patriots remains to be seen, but it seems like progress is being made.

The Steelers like what they’ve seen from Wheaton in practice, though he has had little chance to show what he has to offer in the regular season. He didn’t earn much playing time before his injury, and broke the finger in the game in which he received his most playing time.

He’s a deep threat with a promising skill set, which the team is no doubt eager to see, especially with lacking play on both sides of the ball and a 2-5 record. Wheaton’s help would certainly be appreciated against the 6-2 Patriots and their No. 5 pass defense.
