It seems likely that, if the two sides did not meet to actually discuss options for changing the name, that the Goodell was concerned with how the team plans to deal with the continuing opposition to the name. Snyder reportedly reiterated to Goodell in the meeting that he has no plans to change the team’s name.
The name has been under fire for being offensive to Native Americans. Snyder is adamant that he will not change the name under any circumstances, saying in a letter to Redskins fans earlier in October that he has “listened carefully” to both sides, but that the offended individuals should “try to respect what the name means for all of us in the extended Washington Redskins family, but among Native Americans too.”
The league has said they will not force Snyder to change the name, saying the decision is Snyder’s to make in the end. This meeting seems to make it clear that the league wants to make sure things are handled properly whichever way the Redskins go, however.
