Chuck Pagano doesn’t know why Trent Richardson isn’t productive

The Colts running back has struggled with his new team, yet his head coach is still confident the yards will come.

Indianapolis Colts running back Trent Richardson continues to struggle with his new team and coach Chuck Pagano is still trying to figure out exactly why the No. 3 overall pick in 2012 hasn't been productive, per Pro Football Talk.

The Colts gave up a first-round draft pick to trade for Richardson in September with the hopes of finding a more balanced offensive attack. Richardson was the most sought-after running back coming out of college in 2012, rushing for 1,679 and 21 touchdowns for Alabama in 2011 and looking like the next great all-around back.

However, Richardson has struggled significantly in the NFL, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry his rookie season for the Cleveland Browns while putting up 12 touchdowns. With the Colts, Richardson has just 272 yards rushing at 2.8 yards per carry and just two touchdowns, and has just 24 yards total rushing yards the past two games combined.

The Colts head coach is still confident in the young running back, however, and says that a lot of the problems have been out of his control.

“You look at Trent’s runs, for whatever reason, there’s penetration, a guy is pulling and falls down,” Pagano said. “There’s a guy in the backfield waiting there. He had some really good runs, plays that he made in space, screens, things like that he does a great job with. That’s going to come.”

The Colts next face the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 24 at 4:05 p.m. ET.
