Vernon Davis, Mike Wallace injury concerns loom over Week 11

Dr. Ali Mohamadi, SB Nation’s medical expert, checks in on the most pressing injury questions for Week 11.

Thearon W. Henderson

This weekend’s NFL injury report features a number of key players whose status is up in the air as we approach game time, with three prominent tight ends heading the list. Here are some key injuries, and their impact, for Week 11.

Tight ends

Keepers Week 11

Matt Ufford offers you fantasy advice on Riley Cooper, Colin Kaepernick, Bills running backs and more.
Martellus Bennett, Chicago Bears, ankle

CHI (5-4) vs. BAL (4-5), 1:00 p.m.

The Chicago TE, who has been a pleasant fantasy surprise this season, has been limited in practice this week due to an ankle injury and is listed as questionable on the team's injury report. Bennett missed practice entirely on Thursday, but has participated the past two days and seems likely to take the field today. If he is unable to suit up, backup Dante Rosario would get the start this afternoon against the Ravens.

Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers, concussion

SF (6-3) @ NO (7-2), 4:25 p.m.

Davis left in the second quarter of San Francisco's loss to Carolina last week with a concussion after being driven headfirst into the turf on a pass thrown his way. He has returned to practice on a limited basis this week and appears likely to get the start in today's showdown against New Orleans, although the decision will be made in pregame warmups. The 49ers struggled to mount any sort of passing attack against the Panthers in his absence, and Davis would be sorely missed if he can't take the field this afternoon.

Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons, toe

ATL (2-7) @ TB (1-8), 1:00 p.m.

The future Hall of Famer, who has missed only two games in his 16-plus year career, suffered a left toe injury in the Falcons' loss to Seattle last week that has kept him out of full practice this week. Although it hasn't officially been announced as such by the Falcons, the symptoms described sound like turf toe, which is technically a joint sprain that can result in significant pain and limited range of motion. If Gonzalez is unable to play today, backup TEs Levine Toilolo and Chase Coffman would take his place in the lineup.

Wide receivers

Mike Wallace, Miami Dolphins, hamstring

MIA (4-5) vs. SD (4-5), 4:05 p.m.

The Dolphins receiver suffered a hamstring injury in practice this past week and is listed as questionable on the team's injury report for today's game against San Diego. Wallace was able to do light work on Friday, and despite the injury it appears he is likely to start this afternoon. Hamstring strains are notoriously slow to heal and prone to re-injury if tested before completely healed, and if Wallace is unable to play, Marlon Moore and Rishard Matthews are likely to see more action alongside Brian Hartline at the WR position for Miami.
