The Panthers are coming off their biggest win of the season over the San Francisco 49ers, and are positioned to take another step forward in the NFC. They’re trying to catch the New Orleans Saints, but the Patriots have a test of their own as a win would increase their lead in the AFC East and hold off the New York Jets.

More on the matchup: The Patriots have a 3-2 all-time record against the Panthers, including a win in Super Bowl XXXVIII. They last met in 2009 when Kevin Faulk ran in a touchdown and Tom Brady threw another in a 20-10 victory. Monday will be the first time Bill Belichick faces an offense led by Cam Newton, but the biggest fear for the Patriots will be contending with Carolina's defense. The return of Rob Gronkowski certainly helps, but running the ball could be difficult for New England.
