Jordan Reed, Joique Bell headline Week 11 NFL injury report

SB Nation’s medical expert, Dr. Ali Mohamadi, takes a look at the injury news from this week’s games.

Sunday’s NFL contests were light on injuries as a whole, but even so, several several starters failed to finish their games due to injury. Here’s a rundown of yesterday’s notable injuries, and their impact.

Running Backs

Joique Bell, Detroit Lions (leg)

Bell left in the second half of Detroit's loss to the Steelers yesterday with a right lower leg injury, which he believes is most likely an aggravation of a case of tendinitis he has been playing through the past several weeks. The Lions' RB aggravated the injury after being tackled by the Steelers' Cameron Heyward and Troy Polamalu, following which he experienced pain making it difficult to apply pressure to the leg. Tendonitis refers to inflammation or swelling of one or multiple tendons which are structures that connect muscles to bones. There has been no further report from the team regarding the injury, but if it is indeed related to Bell's preexisting tendinitis, the usual treatment is conservative, including rest and anti-inflammatory medications. Return time based on when the athlete is able to play through the pain associated with the condition.

Wide Receivers

Emmanuel Sanders, Pittsburgh Steelers (foot)

On a day when the Steelers’ passing attack shredded the Detroit secondary, the only negative was the loss of Sanders to a right foot injury in the second quarter of Pittsburgh’s 37-27 victory. The team has not released any information regarding the specific diagnosis, which will await further testing today. In Sanders’ absence, WR Jerricho Cotchery continued his excellent play yesterday, including a 20-yard touchdown reception, his fifth in the past three games.

Tight Ends

Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins (concussion)

The Redskins standout rookie, one of the bright spots in a disappointing season thus far, left early in the second half of Washington's 24-16 loss to the Eagles with a concussion. Reed will need to pass neurological testing this week in order to suit up against the 49ers next Monday night.

Cornerbacks

Jabari Greer, New Orleans Saints (leg)

Yesterday's scariest injury most likely took place to Greer, the New Orleans cornerback, whose left leg bent gruesomely as he landed while attempting to cover a Colin Kaepernick pass attempt. As Greer landed, his left ankle twisted inward, followed by a buckling of the knee. The Saints have not officially given details regarding the nature of the injury, but it stands to believe he sustained significant damage to one or both joints, and possibly the tibia and/or fibula, the bones of the lower leg. Early indications are that Greer's season is over, but when he would be able to return in 2014 will depend upon the results of further imaging studies.
