Broncos were unaware of Wes Welker’s concussion during Chiefs game

Wes Welker played with a concussion, despite passing an examination on Sunday.

The Broncos are very lucky to have not lost Wes Welker to a major head injury. The slot receiver played with a concussion despite going through league protocol on Sunday against the Chiefs, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post. Welker suffered the head injury early into the fourth quarter and was evaluated for a neck injury, per Klis.

The concussion was not apparent during the initial test and Welker played through the neck pain caused by a collision with two Chiefs defenders. The veteran played on the drive following the hit but was immediately taken out after concussion symptoms became more noticeable to the Broncos medical staff, according Klis. The medical staff did follow the instructions the league has made mandatory, but at the time, a neck injury seemed to be the sole injury and Welker was treated as such.

It is unclear whether or not the concussion will hold Welker out of the Broncos' matchup against the Patriots on Sunday.
