Jay Ratliff agrees to contract with Bears

Ratliff has landed a job after being released from the PUP list by the Cowboys in October.

Jim Rogash

The Chicago Bears have signed former Cowboys defensive tackle Jay Ratliff to a one-year deal, according to Ed Werder of ESPN.

The deal comes after Ratliff was released from the Cowboys without seeing a single snap this season. The former seventh-round pick from Auburn was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury in 2012 just six games into the season. Ratliff entered this season on the PUP list, and the Cowboys decided to cut ties rather than activate the four-time Pro Bowler.

Ratliff is the best seventh-round draft pick since Donald Driver, making four straight trips to Hawaii from 2008-11. He has 228 career tackles, 27 sacks and four forced fumbles in his 9th season in the league.

The Bears have been hurting on the interior line, with Henry Melton out for the season with an ACL injury he suffered in September. Defensive tackle Nick Collins has likely played his last snap in the NFL, with a neck injury that is expected keep him off the field permanently. The Bears defense in 27th in the NFL in yards per game this season, uncharacteristic for a franchise known for its defensive play.
