Jerry Jones thinks he’s doing a fine job running Cowboys

The Cowboys owner says he plans on spending the next 10-15 years as the general manager.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is so pleased with his accomplishments as the team's general manager he feels as if his best work has come over the past few seasons, despite the underwhelming performance of the team over that time.

“The facts are I really do think, the way things have rolled out, I’m getting to do some of the best work that I’ve done, relatively speaking in my career, over these last several years,” Jones said Friday morning on KRLD-FM, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN.

The Dallas defense in particular has struggled with issues of depth in the wake of numerous injuries the past two seasons, with Monte Kiffin’s squad this season ranked 31st overall and last against the pass. The defense has allowed historic numbers in the passing game the past two seasons, and while depth has certainly been a contributing factor, so has the decision to not address pressing needs at certain key positions.

The Cowboys are 21-21 since Jones hired Jason Garrett as the head coach in 2011 and are exactly 133-133 since 1997, a span in which the Cowboys have just three postseason appearances and one actual playoff win. Jones, who has held the dual role of general manager and owner since purchasing the franchise in 1989, has maintained that he will not give up the GM duties as long as he is owner and reiterated his intentions to be with the team for at least the next 10-15 years.

“Of course, I said it, and I really meant that, and just think about that a minute: Why wouldn’t you?” Jones said. “One of the reasons that I, to some degree, have taken the risks that I have over the years, and kind of had the professional life that I followed, is so that I get to decide when enough is enough. God willing. So I do get to decide that.

“It’s a certain part of working for yourself if you still are standing when the time comes. So I get to really make that decision, and I want to make it in a way that I think is in the best interest of the team, franchise and really our fans. A lot of people just need to hear me say I know it’s in our best interest for us to operate the way we have.”

The Cowboys face the New York Giants on Sunday, with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
