Rex Ryan noncommittal on Geno Smith as the Jets starting quarterback

The Jets may have a new quarterback under center in Week 13.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith has started all 11 games of the season for New York. With a 5-6 record, the results have been mixed for the former West Virginia passer in his debut season in the NFL. Despite suffering just their first two-game losing streak of the season, Jets head coach Rex Ryan may consider a change at the position.

During his postgame press conference, following a 19-3 loss to the Raven, Ryan failed to acknowledge Smith as his starter moving forward. The Jets are still in the hunt for the playoffs, but Ryan claimed he needed to look at tape of the game before deciding who to play at quarterback in Week 13 against the Dolphins.

Smith went 9 of 22 for 127 yards and two interceptions against the Ravens, just one week after having a 10.1 passer rating against the Bills in a 37-14 loss. On the season, Smith has a 55.2 completion percentage with 2,227 passing yards to go along with eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Smith has added 178 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, but has also fumbled nine times and has lost five of those loose balls. His quarterback rating on the season is a measly 62.1 offering.

In comparison to Mark Sanchez’s rookie season, the numbers are pretty similar. Sanchez has a 53.8 completion percentage with 2,444 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in his rookie year. His 15 games in 2009 offered a 63.0 passer rating, 106 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns and 10 fumbles with three lost. The numbers are surprisingly similar for the duo, when you consider that Sanchez was benched for Smith, with the latter considered an upgrade over his more experienced counterpart.

For Ryan, the options are limited if he were turn away from Smith. Fellow first-year player Matt Simms has played sparingly this season but looked talented in the preseason. There is also David Garrard, who has not played a down in two and a half years, despite being on the Dolphins and Jets training camps over the last two offseasons.
