Daniel Thomas injury: Dolphins RB likely out for season

The Dolphins will have to rely solely on Lamar Miller at running back moving forward.

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

The Dolphins suffered a blow to their already-middling running back group in Sunday's loss to the Panthers. Third-year back Daniel Thomas tore a ligament in his left ankle during the loss, according to the Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly. Thomas is now likely done for the season, per Kelly.

Thomas was used as of a part of the running back rotation with Lamar Miller. With 77 carries this season, Thomas rushed for 279 yards and three touchdowns. The third-year player averaged 3.6 yards per carry and was the main back in short-yardage situations. Miller and Marcus Thigpen will have to handle those duties moving forward. Rookie Mike Gillislee is also on the roster but has been mostly a healthy scratch for games.

The Dolphins are 26th in the league in yards per game (85.4) and 18th in the NFL in rushing touchdowns (7). Miami will travel to the Meadowlands in Week 13 to face the Jets.
