Dolphins will place Jonathan Martin on non-football injury list

The offensive lineman will go on the reserve list while dealing with the fallout from his abrupt departure from the Dolphins this past week.

The Miami Dolphins are expected to place offensive tackle Jonathan Martin on the reserve/non-football injury list this next week, according to a report from the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The young lineman abruptly left the team this past week after an incident in the cafeteria that reportedly involved a prank that had fellow teammates and offensive linemen refusing to sit with Martin, who then slammed his tray and quickly left. Martin was stated to be on an “indefinite” absence from the team afterward and is expected to miss at the very least the next few games of the 2013 season.

The case has drawn the attention of the NFLPA, which is investigating speculation that the incident was the result of a culture of hazing or bullying in the Dolphins locker room. Guard Richie Incognito has been at the center of these reports, vehemently denying that he has had any part in hazing or bullying, while Martin sent Ingonito a text message that stated he was upset with “the culture around football” and that “the locker room got to me a little.” Martin also stated in the texts he does not blame his teammates.

The Dolphins released a statement saying they are in contact with Martin while denying the allegations of hazing. Ian Rapoport states, however, that Martin likely won’t be returning anytime soon:

Martin was named the starting left tackle prior to this season after Jake Long departed via free agency. The Dolphins have allowed the most sacks in the NFL this season, and next take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football after a bye in Week 9.
