Jay Cutler injury: Bears QB will return in Week 10, per report

Jay Cutler is reportedly ahead of schedule in his return from injury and could play on Sunday vs. Detroit.

Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler is expected to return to practice this week and start on Sunday against Detroit, according to a report from Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

Cutler suffered a groin injury in Week 7 against Washington and was originally expected to miss between four and six weeks. His initial rehab went well, but a report from the Bears' official website last week said Cutler was still expected to miss three more weeks. That timeline moved up quickly and instead of returning to the field in Week 12, Cutler could play in Week 10 barring a setback in practice this week.

Josh McCown will start in place of Cutler on Monday against Green Bay, but it may be the only start he makes in replacement duty. The Bears had a bye week last week, so Cutler may only miss one full game, despite some initial reports he may miss the entire month of November.

An early return would be a big boost for the Bears who are fighting to remain in playoff contention. Although he’s been turnover-prone at times this season, Cutler was playing very well prior to the injury. He posted a 104.2 passer rating in October, up from his 85.1 passer rating in September.
