This weekend’s NFL injury report is relatively light but still features a number of key players as many fantasy leagues head toward the playoffs. Here are some key injuries, and their impact, for Week 13. All times listed are ET.
Andre Ellington, Jordan Reed lead Week 13 injury report
Andre Ellington is one of a handful of running backs questionable for Sunday’s NFL action. The status of Broncos tight end Julius Thomas could be a factor in an AFC West showdown with the Chiefs. A closer look at the big names on this week’s injury report.
Running backs
Knowshon Moreno, Denver Broncos, ankle
DEN (9-2) @ KC (9-2), 4:25 p.m.
Moreno, who had the best game of his career with 224 rushing yards in last week's loss to the Patriots, injured his ankle late in the game and was replaced by rookie C.J. Anderson in overtime. After the game -- diagnosed with a bone bruise, wearing a walking boot and on crutches -- it didn't look likely that Moreno would recover in time for this afternoon's showdown with the Chiefs. But the Denver RB has improved markedly over the course of the week and practiced in full on Friday. Moreno looks ready to go today, and he remains a good fantasy start, but be wary that bone bruises, especially in the ankle, result in pain and can limit weight bearing and range of motion. For this reason, Anderson and Montee Ball may get more looks than usual for the Broncos.
Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals, knee
ARI (7-4) @ PHI (6-5), 1:00 p.m.
Before the season who thought Arizona would be serious playoff contenders or that Ellington would be a fantasy consideration at RB? Not many, but now Cardinals fans will have to wait until game time to find out if their versatile playmaker will be able to take the field in a pivotal matchup at Philadelphia due to a knee injury suffered in practice on Thursday. Ellington has officially been listed as questionable for today's game, and although the Cardinals have not released results of his knee MRI, there doesn't appear to be major concern regarding structural damage. If Ellington can't play, starter Rashard Mendenhall would likely get more carries, with backups Stepfan Taylor and Alfonso Smith waiting in the wings.
DeAngelo Williams, Carolina Panthers, quadriceps
CAR (8-3) vs. TB (3-8), 1:00 p.m.
Williams suffered a contusion of the quadriceps in last week's win over Miami and has not practiced the entire week. Although he is officially listed as questionable on the Panthers' injury report, it appears iffy that he will take the field, making things particularly difficult for Carolina, given that backups Jonathan Stewart (ankle) and Mike Tolbert (knee) both are nursing injuries of their own. Thigh contusions, which are deep bruises, result in significant pain upon contact and although unlikely a multi-week issue for Williams, it often takes 1-2 weeks for a full recovery.
Tight ends
Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons, toe
ATL (2-9) @ BUF (4-7), 4:05 p.m.
The future Hall of Famer, who has missed only two games in his 16-plus year career, has been dealing with a left toe injury the past two weeks that has kept him limited in practices but able to suit up for games. Although he remains listed as questionable on the Falcons' injury report, it appears Gonzalez will suit up again this afternoon at Buffalo. If Gonzalez is unable to play today, backup TEs Levine Toilolo and Chase Coffman would take his place in the lineup.
Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins, concussion
WAS (3-8) vs. NYG (4-7), 8:30 p.m.
Reed, who has been one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season for Washington, suffered a concussion in the team's Week 11 loss at Philadelphia, causing him to miss last week's contest against the 49ers. Reed has returned to limited work in practice this week and appears ready to play tonight against the Giants, although Head Coach Mike Shanahan has not announced his final decision on the rookie TE's status as of yet.
Julius Thomas, Denver Broncos, knee
DEN (9-2) @ KC (9-2), 4:25 p.m.
Thomas suffered what the Broncos have described as a knee strain in Denver's Week 11 win over Kansas City and missed last week's loss to New England. The Denver TE -- a favorite target of Peyton Manning's in the red zone this season -- did not suffer any structural damage to the knee but has been dealing with soreness and has been limited in practice this week. If Thomas is unable to play this afternoon, backup TEs Virgil Green and Jacob Tamme would split time in the Denver lineup.
