Asante Samuel uncertain of future with Falcons

Samuel did not play a single snap last Sunday against the Packers and may be a cap casualty in 2014.

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel was replaced in the starting lineup in Week 14 against the Green Bay Packers by rookie Robert Alford and didn't play a single snap. Though Samuel has remained quiet for most of the week following Atlanta's 22-21 loss to Green Bay, he said on Wednesday that he doesn't know what his future with the Falcons is at this time.

Head coach Mike Smith has insisted that if veterans are being benched in favor of young players for the final few games during Atlanta’s massively disappointing 3-10 season, it’s only because it gives them the best chance to win and not because they are evaluating for the future. Still, the Falcons will have to make a decision soon on whether or not Samuel is a part of that future.

Owed a $3.5 million base salary plus a roster bonus in 2014, one could speculate that the team would not pay that to a veteran non-starter, if they feel confident that Alford or another player can start in his place next season. Samuel, an 11-year veteran that made the Pro Bowl four times in his career during stints with the Patriots and Eagles, will be 33 next season.

Atlanta is ranked near the bottom of the league in interceptions this year.
