NFL news: Garrett Hartley released, Corey Webster and others to injured reserve

The New Orleans Saints released kicker Garrett Hartley on Tuesday. Hartley missed a pair of field goals in a loss to the St. Louis Rams in Week 15, one of which was a 26-yarder that badly missed to the left. The other kick was blocked, but it came off the snap low. New Orleans previously worked out Shayne Graham, Neil Rackers, John Potter, Brandon McManus and Derek Dimke, so it stands to reason that they'll opt for one of those kickers for the remainder of the season.

The New York Giants placed cornerback Corey Webster on injured reserve on Tuesday. Webster has been banged up all season and had his season end with a mix of groin and ankle injuries. He's been with the Giants for nine years and was on both Super Bowl-winning teams, but has only played in four games this season. It's hard to see him back with the team next season.

San Francisco 49ers fans have raised money to put up a billboard in Seattle that will feature a picture of Dwight Clark making "The Catch" in the background with five Lombardi Trophies in the foreground, along with the text "How Many Do You Have?" The billboard will likely be available in late December and will stay up through January, so it can be viewed by those attending home playoff games in Seattle.

The Pittsburgh Steelers placed linebacker LaMarr Woodley on injured reserve Tuesday. Woodley sustained a calf injury against the Cincinnati Bengals, the second calf injury he's suffered this year. Woodley missed three games with the first injury. He's been injured frequently in recent seasons, though he had five sacks in limited action this season.

The Detroit Lions could be without tight end Brandon Pettigrew in the near future. The starting tight end will undergo tests on his injured ankle to determine what's wrong, and given that the team is in the middle of a playoff race, it's big news. Pettigrew was sidelined in Monday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, though he did return to action following the injury.

Earlier in the day, three other players were added to injured reserve: Pat Angerer of the Indianapolis Colts, with a knee injury; Cecil Shorts, who was shut down by the Jacksonville Jaguars with a groin injury; and Cincinnati Bengals punter Kevin Huber, who had a broken jaw and cracked vertebrae.
