Victor Cruz injury: Giants WR likely out for the season following knee surgery

Victor Cruz’s 2013 season appears to be over.

A concussion and a knee injury will keep New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz out against the Detroit Lions this Sunday, and likely out for the season according to the team's official injury report.

Cruz underwent surgery on Thursday afternoon to clean out a left knee injury, the team announced.

Rumors that Cruz’s injury could be season-ending have been floating around for several days. Thursday’s news all but assures that he won’t play this season, as the 5-9 Giants likely wouldn’t bother risking further injury by bringing him back in a meaningless Week 17 game.

Cruz was injured while trying to haul in a pass during a 23-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 15, coming down hard on his head after going high for the ball. Adding insult to injury, the 16-yard reception was overturned by video replay as he was being helped off the field, stalling his season receiving total 2 yards shy of his third career 1,000-yard season.

Cruz has 73 receptions and four touchdowns in 2013.

Second-year receiver Rueben Randle will fill Cruz's starting spot opposite of Mario Manningham.
