Matthew Stafford wishes he had some throws back

The Lions quarterback, in hindsight, would have a been a bit more careful with the ball as of late.

Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

The Lions have hit a bit of a slide in recent weeks. Part of the issue for Detroit is turnovers. Quarterback Matt Stafford has thrown 10 interceptions in the last five games, which has hindered several drives for the Lions. Despite his gunslinger mentality, Stafford knows he needs to improve on his accuracy and overall play.

Over five games, Stafford has completed just 50.5-percent of passes to go along with eight touchdowns and ten interceptions with a passer rating of 62.6. The young quarterback knows that his performance has played a large role in the Lions lack of success down the stretch:

“There are definitely throws that I wish I had back,” Stafford said Friday. “I feel like I’ve made some good plays, but bottom line is winning and losing games. They make a field goal at the end of the game to win it. We have a chance to come back. We don’t get it done with 30-something seconds left. That’s a tough pill to swallow.”

The Lions are 7-7 and need to win their last two games if they plan on having a shot at the division title and the playoffs. The improvement of Stafford is essential for a two-game winning streak. The Lions face the Giants at home on Sunday and then will travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings in Week 17.
