John Carlson injury: Vikings TE season ended by concussion

The Vikings will be without their top two tight ends to close the season.

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport

The Minnesota Vikings will have to ride former practice squad tight end Chase Ford a bit longer. Minnesota placed tight end John Carlson on injured reserve with a concussion. The head injury was Carlson's third reported concussion of his NFL career. He suffered the injury in Week 14 against the Ravens.

Carlson is signed through 2016, but is considering retirement, according to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The veteran signed a five-year contract during the 2012 offseason and has served as a backup to Kyle Rudolph over the last two seasons. Rudolph was placed on injured reserve earlier in the year, which gave Carlson an increased role in the offense.

Carlson has played in the league for six seasons and collected 177 receptions for 1,906 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He spent his first four seasons in Seattle after being drafted in the second round in 2008. He missed the entire 2011 season due to injury.
