Luke Kuechly almost ties single-game tackle record

Luke Kuechly broke a team record, and almost claimed an NFL record in Week 16.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly almost broke the NFL record for tackles in a single game, recording 24 against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

The second-year linebacker was tasked with covering the Saints’ dangerous screen passing game, which allowed him to total 24 total tackles, while adding an interception in the team’s 17-13 win. There were few defensive players he wasn’t a part of, roaming all over the field to help hold New Orleans to one touchdown.

Brian Urclacher's retains the NFL record of 25 tackles, recorded in 2006 against the Arizona Cardinals. Tackles only became a recorded statistic in 2000, but it doesn't Kuechly's attempt any less impressive given that some of the league's best linebackers have played in this period.

It has been a remarkable two years for the Panthers middle linebacker. He won defensive rookie of the year honors in 2012 for recording 164 total tackles and while his season total slipped in his second year, he’s been more effective at making stops, increasing his tackles for loss and recording more interceptions.

The Panthers are now in the playoffs and could win the NFC South with a Week 17 victory. Another big performance by Kuechly would help put them in position for a first round bye in an unpredictable season for the Panthers.
