Falcons vs. 49ers 2013 score update: Atlanta up 10-3 at halftime

Despite the apparent mismatch on paper, Atlanta matched the 49ers in the first half and lead at halftime.

If the 49ers are going to record the big win many expected against Atlanta, they will need a strong second half. The Falcons got off to a solid start and lead San Francisco 10-3 at halftime.

Atlanta didn't look like a 4-10 team with nothing to play for, matching the 49ers' physicality in the first half. Matt Ryan was effective early, completing 16-of-20 passes in the half. The big play of the first half came on a 3rd-and-6 when Ryan bought some time and hit Drew Davis over the middle. Davis made a couple of impressive moves in the open field and raced 59 yards, setting up a Steven Jackson touchdown run.

San Francisco started the game well offensively, coming away with a field goal on its opening drive. The 49ers continued to move the ball, but struggled on third down, converting 1-of-5 attempts. The 49ers averaged 5.2 yards per rush attempt and might try to get Frank Gore more involved in the second half. He carried seven times in the first half, gaining 36 yards.

Ryan and the Falcons ran a successful 2-minute drill to close the first half, coming away with a field goal to make it a 10-3 game.

There is plenty on the line for San Francisco. With a win, the 49ers would clinch a playoff spot and remain in contention for the NFC West title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. If the 49ers lose, they will play Arizona next week in a win-or-go-home scenario for San Francisco.

The 49ers will receive the second half kickoff.
