Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters is set to have Achilles surgery in the near future, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN. The news came from head coach Mike Smith. With just Week 17 left to play, Peters is effectively done for the season. The question, now, is whether Peters will be ready for the start of training camp, preseason or the regular season next year.

Peters sustained the injury after sacking San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick on Monday night. Peters came down awkwardly on his ankle, and had to be helped off the field. On the sideline, Peters was emotional and there were visible tears, so he apparently understood that his injury was serious.
Shortly after, Peters was carted back to the locker room. The 49ers ended up winning the game, 34-24.
Peters took to Twitter to thank all of his supporters. Peters was a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and has been a gem for much of his time with Atlanta. He's set to be a free agent at the end of this season. He finishes the season with a combined 46 tackles and five sacks.
