ACL injuries were down through 13 weeks of the 2013 season compared to previous years, according to a memo sent from the NFL to the Health and Safety Advisory Committee. In the memo that was obtained by the Associated Press, there were 30 ACL injuries from the first preseason game through 13 weeks of the regular season, down from 39 ACL injuries in 2012 over the same period of time. There were 35 in 2011, 37 in 2010 and 31 in 2009, according to the memo.

The Broncos lost Von Miller to a torn ACL, but a league memo says those types of injuries are down overall in 2013.


The data is for all types of injuries to the ACL, including tears and strains. The data also covered MCL injuries, which was up to 89 through Week 13 of this season, compared to 74 such injuries in 2012. However, there were 106 MCL injuries in 2011, 89 in 2010 and 103 in 2009.
The Broncos lost star linebacker Von Miller to a torn ACL in Week 16, just as they are preparing for the playoffs. Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, Colts receiver Reggie Wayne and Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin are also among the notable players lost to ACL injuries this season.
