NFL roundup: Robbie Gould extension, Steve Smith out

The Chicago Bears signed kicker Robbie Gould to a four-year contract extension on Friday. Gould will remain with the Bears through 2017 on a deal that's worth $15 million, with $9 million of that guaranteed. Gould is one of two players to eclipse 1,000 career points with the Bears, and is the third-most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith will miss the team's Week 17 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Smith sprained his PCL in the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints in Week 16. Smith will likely play when they get to the playoffs, and the Panthers can probably get by against the struggling Falcons without him. Carolina is currently fighting to hang on to the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was placed on injured reserve Friday. Romo will miss Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, which is a battle for the NFC East crown. This also means that Romo will be out for the playoffs. He has a herniated disk in his back and needed surgery to correct it.

It's that time again -- when the news starts to pick up about players declaring for the NFL Draft. Utah tight end Jake Murphy, one of the best at his position in college football, announced his intention to enter the 2014 NFL Draft. He's 6'4 and 252 pounds, and had 417 yards and five touchdowns playing in just eight games this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks signed a four-year, $22 million contract on Friday. Marks will remain with the Jaguars through 2017. He signed a one-year contract this past offseason after four mediocre seasons with the Tennessee Titans, and has emerged in a big way. He's got four sacks, eight passes defensed and two forced fumbles.
