Adrian Peterson injury: Vikings star out Week 17

Peterson’s season came to an early end with the announcement he will not play on Sunday.

Minnesota downgraded running back Adrian Peterson from doubtful to out for the game on Sunday against Detroit, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports. Peterson has been dealing with a foot injury for the last few weeks.

The foot injury kept Peterson out of the lineup in Week 15 and has severely limited him during these final weeks of the season. Following a 211-yard outburst against Chicago in Week 13, Peterson ran for just 58 yards on 18 carries during the last three weeks. With Minnesota out of contention, there is little reason to play Peterson, especially at less than 100 percent. He ends the year with 1,266 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and 171 receiving yards to go with another touch in 14 games.

Along with Peterson, backup running back Toby Gerhart has been ruled out for Sunday with a hamstring injury. Gerhart may have played his last game as a Viking and this will give an opportunity to the younger running backs on the roster.

Minnesota will likely start third-string running back Matt Asiata. Joe Banyard could also see some action against the Lions. Asiata started Week 15 against the Eagles and scored three times. The Utah alum carried 30 times for 51 rushing yards and the three touchdowns.
