The Cleveland Browns have received permission from the New England Patriots to interview offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, according to Albert Breer of the NFL Network. The Browns were always going to get permission for the interview, given that they are interviewing McDaniels for what would be a promotion as they attempt to fill their head coaching vacancy.

The Cleveland Browns were granted permission to interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for their vacant head coaching position.

That vacancy was created when the team elected to fire Rob Chudzinski on Sunday, shortly after the team’s Week 17 game. Chudzinski had just one season to make something happen in Cleveland, but was dealt a poor hand when he took over a team with two second-year players who were selected in the first round the previous year ... who were either bad or not a good fit for the team.
McDaniels has head coaching experience with the Denver Broncos, though he compiled a record of 11-17 when he was there. His success has primarily come as the offensive coordinator with the Patriots. This is his second stint in that role. McDaniels will likely interview before the Patriots play their first playoff game in the Divisional Round.
At this time, there are no other significant rumors about possible head coaching candidates in Cleveland.
