LeSean McCoy dominates with over 200 yards vs. Lions

Snowy conditions necessitated one player stepping up, and LeSean McCoy took over.

The NFL has seen some dominant rushing performances in the last three years, but few rival the dominance LeSean McCoy showed against the Detroit Lions on an afternoon Lincoln Financial Field was blanketed in eight inches of snow.

McCoy was mediocre in the first thee quarters, but took over in the fourth. Separated by a kick return, he ran in long touchdowns of 40 and 57 yards, single-handedly gashing Detroit for over 100 rushing yards in two minutes. McCoy became the third member of the Eagles to rush for 200 yards in team history, last happening by Duce Staley in 2000.

It’s easy to see 217 total yards in isolation and write off the number. It’s impressive to be sure, but there have been bigger running performances and more touchdowns. What sets McCoy’s day apart was the weather, which he managed better than any other player on the field. Take a look at his rushing yards in context.

  • More yards than Matthew Stafford (148) or Nick Foles (179) threw for
  • Four times more yards than Calvin Johnson had receiving (49)
  • 54 yards more than every other running back on the field combined for (163)
  • Detroit managed a total of only 11 yards more (228)

A lot is made of what head coach Chip Kelly has done for quarterbacks, but his offense has revolutionized how McCoy runs. He is on pace for over 1,600 rushing yards, and could belong in the MVP conversation -- if not for a few stellar quarterbacks.
