Tyrann Mathieu injury: Honey Badger carted off field against Rams

The star rookie safety will not return against St. Louis.

Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu injured his leg against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday and was carted off of the field. Mathieu has a knee injury and will not return to the game, per the Cardinals' official Twitter account.

Mathieu’s left leg bent awkwardly on a kick return in the third quarter and he tried to walk it off, but it appeared his knee buckled and he was carted into the locker room. The Cardinals are currently beating the Rams, 23-3, with little doubt that Mathieu’s presence on defense has something to do with the lack of scoring by St. Louis. Arizona’s second-leading tackler, the rookie safety out of LSU is considered by many to be a good candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

He had his ninth pass deflection of the season on Sunday, and he also has two interceptions and a sack this year.

Mathieu's backup at safety is Rashad Johnson.
