Bowe is an unrestricted free agent after his sixth season with the Chiefs, during which he had only 801 receiving yards, his lowest total over the last three seasons, and a career-low three touchdowns. Much of Bowe's problems came from a lack of consistent play at the quarterback position, though. Both Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn struggled to move the ball down the field, and even though Bowe is an extremely talented receiver and a large target, standing at 6'2 and weighing in at 221 pounds, the quarterbacks were unable to connect with him. Bowe's 801 yards still led the Chiefs in receiving.
The Chiefs are expected by the majority of draft analysts to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and if they do, having a wide receiver of Bowe’s caliber would help any young quarterback make the transition from college to the NFL.
The Chiefs used their franchise tag to keep Bowe in Kansas City for the 2012 season and paid him a little over $9.5 million for the year. Working out a long-term deal with the talented wide receiver could prove to be difficult, especially if they’re far apart on what they feel he worth. The Chiefs have plenty of cap space available to accommodate a contract for Bowe, but if they want to sign a few other free agents, especially anyone who could earn a decent paycheck, they might not be able to come to a deal.
