Ryan Clady injury update: Broncos tackle says healing is ‘5 to 6 month process’

The former first round pick will likely miss the entire offseason.

USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos left tackle Ryan Clady said it will take five to six months for his rotator cuff to heal after surgery, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.

Clady suffered the injury in the season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. After the Broncos were eliminated in the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens, Clady pulled out of the Pro Bowl because of the injury.

Clady said there is “no way” he will be at minicamps this offseason because of rehab, according to Anderson.

News has been swirling around Clady, from his injury to his contract. Clady is set to be a free agent, but the Broncos said they are going to use the franchise tag on the 12th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the team will try to work out a long-term deal.

Mile High Report said placing the franchise tag on Clady was expected. But the Broncos have to be weary of Clady’s injury history now:

The Broncos want a longer period of time to negotiate with Clady to come up with a deal that is fair to both while at the same time hedging against possible relapse in play due to injuries. This is the second major surgery Clady has undergone in the last three years---the first being to repair the patellar tendon he damaged in a pick-up game of basketball. It also shows they value his talent and didn’t want him to hit free agency.

Clady hasn’t missed a game since being drafted. In five years, he has started all 80 regular season games. He earned his third Pro Bowl nod and his second first team All-Pro honor in 2012.
