Tony Gonzalez rumors: Falcons TE could ‘waver’ on retirement

It didn’t take long for Gonzalez to lean closer to playing again than retiring.

Perhaps there is one more year left in Tony Gonzalez.

The future Hall of Famer said at the end of the 2012 season that he was 95 percent sure he would retire. But ESPN’s Ed Werder said on SportsCenter on Tuesday that the tight end is beginning to “waver” on those remarks, according to Rotoworld:

"I'm told virtually everyone in the Falcons' organization has been campaigning for Gonzalez to make one more Super Bowl run," said Werder. "And I'm told that he's beginning to waver. The people who have spoken to him seem to believe that they're making progress. In fact, one player close to Gonzalez told me 'I think, if the circumstances are right, that Tony Gonzalez will return.'"

On Friday, Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said he thought Gonzalez was closer to 50/50 on coming back to the NFL.

After falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, Gonzalez told reporters that "it's probably the last time I'm going to wear that uniform."

Despite being on the cusp of turning 37, Gonzalez has not lost a step during his career. He’s only missed two games in his entire 16-year NFL career. And in 2012, at age 36, Gonzalez caught 93 passes for 930 yards and eight touchdowns.

Last season brought Gonzalez his 13th Pro Bowl selection and his sixth first team All-Pro honor.
