Geoff Schwartz reportedly drawing interest from Jets

According to sources, the New York Jets are interested in former Panthers and Vikings guard Geoff Schwartz.

As the 2013 league year approaches, the New York Jets have already been hard at work. On Tuesday, they released a number of players, including Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Bart Scott, helping to relieve $32 million in cap space.

This offseason, the Jets will bring in a lot of new faces at several key positions, and they are looking for building blocks at a bargain rate.

Geoff Schwartz had a solid run with the Carolina Panthers and their highly talented offensive line. He was a force as an offensive guard, as someone that was a road grader. Schwartz is also fresh and ready to go, having only started 19 games since 2009.

In 2012, he tested the market as a free agent, earning attention from the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings. Schwartz wound up heading to the Twin Cities on a one-year deal, expected to fill-in for Steve Hutchinson at left guard.

Schwartz, 25, wound up being a backup that season and will once again be a free agent.

He makes perfect sense for the Jets, who are in cap trouble and need quality offensive linemen. Schwartz is a bargain that just needs an opportunity to start. He could sign with the Jets and fulfill a starting role immediately. GM John Idzik can likely bring him in on a short-term deal, allowing him an opportunity to play for a big extension.

For a team that wants to pound the rock, Geoff Schwartz seems like a good pickup.
