NFL Combine 2013: John Fox readies for offseason push

The head coach of the Denver Broncos wants to improve on the team’s divisional round exit.

USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox is in Indianapolis with most other NFL front office personnel this week for the NFL Combine, the annual event where college football players showcase their skills. Fox sat down with the media in Indy as the Broncos try to leave a painful loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the divisional playoffs in the rearview mirror.

A big storyline leading up to the season was the health of Peyton Manning after multiple neck surgeries during the offseason.

“A lot was made of the neck, the surgeries and all those things,” Fox said. “The reality is it’s a nerve situation and it takes time for nerves to grow. He’s getting better every day so I think, health-wise, he’ll be better than this year.”

The Broncos could be looking to improve at the wide receiver position and Fox didn’t shut the door on picking up players in the draft or free agency.

“This is our third go at it and we’ve made good progress in the first two seasons ... we’re going to do whatever it takes to improve our roster on the college side or pro side,” Fox said.

The 2013 regular season could be a breakout season for the Broncos offense in rookie running back Ronnie Hillman. The former San Diego St. Aztec rushed for 330 yards in 85 carries and also caught 10 passes for 62 yards and he could see a little more time on the gridiron.

“I thought he finished the season very strong, we had to lean on him a little more in the game against Baltimore,” Fox said. “I thought he had one of his better outings.I think he’s capable, we’ll see. It takes time to grow into the NFL, these guys coming out of college, I call it developing a pro body. A full offseason ... I think we’re anticipating he’ll be much improved and be able to play more extended time.”

The Broncos will have the 28th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft in April.
