After 14 seasons in the NFL, Matt Birk is hanging up the cleats for good.

A six-time Pro Bowl center, Birk is expected to announce his retirement Friday, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

Birk, 36, spent the last four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He capped his career by helping the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII earlier this month against the San Francisco 49ers. Birk never missed a game in his four years in Baltimore.
Before joining the Ravens, Birk spent the first 10 years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. He was sixth-round pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. After being a backup for the first two years of his career, Birk started all 16 games in 2000. Since that season, Birk has missed just four games -- all in 2004 with the Vikings.
Birk, who attended Harvard, ended his career with 112 consecutive regular season starts.
If Birk does retire, he’ll leave another two years of his contract on the table, too. The Ravens will lose a reliable, consistent center who, at 36, was still producing, but they’ll save another $2.05 million against the 2013 salary cap.
