Sebastian Vollmer injury: Patriots RT reportedly had knee surgery

The surgery could throw a wrench into the plans for Vollmer, who is set to become a free agent.

USA TODAY Sports

New England Patriots right tackle Sebastian Vollmer had arthroscopic knee surgery recently, according to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.

Vollmer had back and knee troubles during the season, but only missed one game this year.

With Vollmer set to become a free agent, the surgery could be a factor in contract negotiations:

Given the fact he ultimately needed the ‘scope, it’s probably not surprising his performance waned a bit toward the end of the year. No doubt, the surgery will further complicate his contract negotiation with the Patriots, or any other team should he reach the open market. As it was, Vollmer’s chronic back problem made it somewhat difficult.

Vollmer is one of the Patriots' "Big Three" free agent class. At the top of the list is wide receiver Wes Welker, who with each day comes closer to free agency. Also included in that group is Vollmer and cornerback Aqib Talib.

The Patriots could franchise tag Vollmer. If they do, Vollmer would score a $9.6 million contract next season. However, the Patriots would likely rather give Vollmer a long-term contract for a lower annual sum as their starting right tackle.

Vollmer, 28, was a second-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He has been the Patriots’ regular starter at right tackle since 2010, but has battled various injuries.
