Eagles will reportedly ask Nnamdi Asomugha to take pay cut or release him

The Eagles either want to restructure his contract or they will release him, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

With his current contract, Asomugha will be the Eagles’ highest-paid player in 2013 with a $15 million cap hit. Asomugha has three years left on the five-year, $60 million contract he signed with the Eagles before the 2011 season.

If the Eagles cut Asomugha, 31, they will save $11 million. For a team looking to save money and rebuild under new head coach Chip Kelly, $11 million could go a long way.

Kelly was asked at the NFL Combine on Thursday if Asomugha was worth $15 million. He didn’t give the question a straight answer, according to NFL Draft Scout:

“When I watch film, I’m just trying to look at what they can do, what schemes they’re in, trying to understand that. When they called something, what was the guy trying to do? Can he transition, can he get in and out of breaks, can he make plays on the ball, tackle. When I look at guys, I don’t say, ‘is he worth this much or that much.’ ”

Jason Brewer at Bleeding Green Nation thinks Asomugha’s time in Philadelphia is over -- soon:

Short of throwing his stuff out on the lawn of the NovaCare complex, I’m not sure how much more obvious the Eagles can make it that they have no intention of paying Nnamdi Asomugha the $15 million he’d be owed next season. Before today, I thought the most likely scenario was that they’d try to restructure him but now? I think they’ll just eat the $4 million cap hit and cut him.

Asomugha has played the last two seasons with the Eagles, but he hasn’t been as effective as he was in his first eight seasons as an Oakland Raider. Asomugha picked off eight passes in 2006, which started a trend of opposing teams not throwing in his direction. Asomugha was the definition of a “cover corner” before landing in Philly with a rich contract.
