Titans sign S George Wilson to a 2-year contract

Wilson will boost a secondary that was one of the worst in the league in 2012.

US PRESSWIRE

The Tennessee Titans have signed safety George Wilson to a multi-year contract, according to the team's official website:

“George is a quality veteran player,” said Titans general manager Ruston Webster. “He will contribute for us on the field, but his contributions also will come off the field, in the locker room and in the meetings rooms. He was respected as a football player and a leader during his career in Buffalo, and he will bring that veteran presence to our team.”

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, it’s a two-year deal for $4 million:

Wilson was released by the Buffalo Bills on Feb. 11 in a move to free up cap space. The Bills also released veteran linebacker Nick Barnett on the same day. Wilson and Barnett led the team in tackles last season.

Wilson, 31, takes seven years of experience with him to the Titans. He’s played his entire career with the Bills, with the last two years as an every Sunday starter. In 92 career games, Wilson has 334 total tackles, 12 interceptions and 3.5 sacks.

Jimmy Morris of Music City Miracles likes Wilson’s addition to the team:

As I said before, this is a really, really good move for this team. Wilson’s play might have declined a little bit last season, but he is a huge upgrade over what the Titans currently have at safety, and he brings leadership to the locker room- something the Titans desperately need.

In 2012, Wilson didn’t have an interception, but he started all 16 games and recorded 98 total tackles and five pass deflections. In 2011, he had 104 total tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Wilson should provide immediate help to a secondary that allowed 247.8 passing yards per game last season. It was the seventh-worst mark in the NFL.
