NFL free agency 2013: Sean Smith drawing Eagles interest
The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in cornerback Sean Smith as they prepare to get rid of a pair of players who have been to Pro Bowls at the cornerback spot.

The Eagles have thrown Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at opposing wide receivers for the past two seasons. However, it wasn’t particularly successful -- the Eagles’ pass defense was part of why the team sputtered to a 4-12 record after secondary coach Todd Bowles was promoted to defensive coordinator -- and now the team is thinking of getting rid of both. The team won’t give Rodgers-Cromartie the franchise tag, and new head coach Chip Kelly hasn’t been too supportive of Asomugha in public, leading many to believe he won’t be back next season. That means the team could be without both of its former Pro Bowlers at cornerback.
That leaves an opening for Smith, a fourth-year cornerback who has spent his entire career with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins weren’t interested in giving him the $8-$10 million he wanted this offseason, and the Eagles aren’t either. The reports say that they only want Smith “at the right price,” but they are reportedly looking at the cornerback. It’s somewhat surprising Smith feels he can demand such a high price on the open market considering he gave up more touchdowns and first downs than any cornerback in the league last season, but with Brandon Carr and Jason McCourty getting $50 million and $43 million deals over five years, respectively, the market is high for cornerbacks. Perhaps the Eagles will pay up for the 6’3 Smith.
