The Philadelphia Eagles released defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins on Monday, according to the team's official website.

Jenkins, 32, is on the books for a $5.5 million cap hit next season -- a top-six figure on the Eagles for 2013. The Eagles will still pay Jenkins $1.5 million, giving the team an extra $4 million to play with under the salary cap.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said the move was in the “team’s best interest:”
“I had a chance to speak with Cullen today and let him know of our decision,” said general manager Howie Roseman. “It’s one of the most difficult parts of the job. He has been a very productive player in this league for a long time but we felt it in our team’s best interests that we go in a different direction. By releasing him at this point, it gives he and his agent more time to sign on with another team. We wish Cullen and his family all the best as he continues his NFL career.”
Jenkins spent the last two seasons with the Eagles after signing a five-year, $30.37 million contract after the 2010 season. Jenkins still had had three seasons left on his contract.
Jenkins was consistent for the Eagles during his two seasons. Last year, Jenkins started all 16 games, recording 27 total tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. In 2011, his numbers were similar: 40 total tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Jenkins spent the first seven years of his career with the Green Packers. In his time with the Packers, Jenkins tallied 29 sacks, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.
