Mathias Kiwanuka restructures contract for Giants

With each passing day, the Giants are making a little more wiggle room under the 2013 salary cap.

Mark L. Baer-US PRESSWIRE

New York Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka restructured his contract to the help his team clear some cap space for 2013, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger.

The restructure didn’t change how much money Kiwanuka will receive over the next three seasons, but it did shift it to benefit the salary cap this season:

[The Giants converted] an already guaranteed $1.5 million portion of his 2013 base salary to a signing bonus. Kiwanuka will not lose any money from the three-year extension he signed last spring, but this change drops his cap number this season by $1 million (from $5.125 million to $4.125 million).

However, the hits for 2014 and 2015 will increase. Kiwanuka is now set to make $7.07 in 2014, an increase from $6.55 million. In 2015, the cap hit jumps from $6.95 million to $7.45 million.

Ed Valentine of Big Blue View says the restructure is a "step in the right direction."

Kiwanuka, 29, has spent his entire seven-year career with the Giants. In 2012, Kiwanuka recorded 31 tackles and three sacks in 16 games. He started just five games.

The first-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Kiwanuka had his best season in 2008. In 16 starts, Kiwanuka recorded 51 tackles, eight sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries as a defensive end.
