Chiefs trade 2 draft choices for Alex Smith

The Chiefs gave up some of their future in hopes that Alex Smith can help now.

The San Francisco 49ers are getting two draft picks, one 2nd-rounder and a conditional 3rd-rounder, from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for quarterback Alex Smith. Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reported the terms of the deal, and noted that the conditional pick could improve depending how well the Chiefs do with their new signal-caller.

The Smith trade became official earlier today, but had been rumored for days. Smith has played his best football in recent years, but was supplanted by second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick after an injury in 2012. He stood on the sidelines as the young QB led the team to a Super Bowl appearance.

Smith was performing well before going down, as he was completing an absurd 70 percent of his passes. However, he lacked the big-play ability of Kaepernick, and wasn’t able to produce the dominating games that he did.

Kansas City now gets an accurate, steady quarterback. He will be an upgrade of last season’s mess, but he isn’t the type to dramatically improve an offense’s output.
