USA Football takes steps to make game safe for youth

USA Football is educating 21 new ‘Master Trainers’ about player safety through its Heads Up program, and these trainers will then teach the program throughout the country.

USA TODAY Sports

USA Football is taking steps to ensure players’ safety in the sport -- particularly with youth players. According to the NFL, USA Football, which serves as the national governing body for football in the United States, is conducting a “Heads Up Football Master Trainer” workshop in Indianapolis, designed to help make the game safer.

The workshop, which will be held on March 2-3 in Indianapolis, will instruct 21 “Master Trainers,” while focusing on four primary elements of coaching: coaching education, concussion recognition, tackling technique and equipment fitting. Concussion recognition and tackling technique education will help reduce the number of concussions suffered at all levels in the sport -- and teaching youth players to tackle without helmet-to-helmet contact will bode well for future college football and NFL stars’ safety.

Proper helmet and pad fitting will also be taught, as it is pivotal to players’ safety.

The new Master Trainers will then head throughout the country, teaching the Heads Up program to youth players and coaches throughout the United States.
