Chargers likely to release Antonio Garay, according to report

The San Diego Chargers are expected to release defensive tackle Antonio Garay.

US PRESSWIRE

In a move to save salary cap space, the San Diego Chargers are expected to release defensive tackle Antonio Garay, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Garay has been with the Chargers for four seasons, but is likely to be released due to his salary. Garay was scheduled to make $3.5 million plus a $1.5 million roster bonus in 2013.

Garay, 33, only played in eight games, starting none, in 2012 with one sack and 16 tackles. In 2010 and 2011 he served as a starting defensive tackle for the Chargers putting together two fairly productive seasons. He is best known for his wild and colorful hairstyles seen on the Chargers' sideline. Garay was a sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2003 out of Boston College, but played sparingly until his 2010 season in San Diego. Garay can serve as either a 3-4 defensive end or a defensive tackle.

The Chargers are already under the 2013 salary cap, but this gives them even more room to be a player in free agency under new general manager Tom Telesco.
