Charlie Batch expects to re-sign with Steelers

Longtime Steelers backup Charlie Batch expects to stay in that role.

USA TODAY Sports

Veteran quarterback Charlie Batch told WXDX in Pittsburgh on Wednesday that he expects to re-sign with the Steelers this offseason, according to Sports Radio Interviews' transcript of the segment. The 38-year-old Batch has served as Pittsburgh's backup since 2002. He threw 70 passes this past year, his highest total since spending 2001 as a starter for Detroit.

Batch told WXDX that he spoke with the team at the end of the season and received no indication that the Steelers didn’t want him back for 2013:

“My plan is to come back, and I haven’t heard anything differently from the organization. And I think when you leave out of there at the end-of-the-year meetings, you know one way or the other. And they didn’t tell me that they didn’t want me back. So I think that’s a good sign.”

In two 2012 starts, Batch completed 64 percent of his passes for 475 yards, a touchdown, and four interceptions. He struggled in a loss against the Bengals before leading Pittsburgh to win over the Ravens.

During his 10-year tenure with the Steelers, Batch has appeared in 32 games. Prior to that, he logged 48 appearances in four seasons with the Lions. He has become a fan favorite in Pittsburgh, as he has been with the team through two Super Bowl victories and never plays enough to warrant much ire.
