Miles Austin restructures contract with Cowboys, per report

The Cowboys did plenty of work to get under the salary cap Thursday, including restructuring five contracts.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys faced a tough salary cap situation for 2013, but they made it easier Thursday by restructuring the contract of wide receiver Miles Austin and four others, according to Nick Eatman of dallascowboys.com. Eatman added that the newly reworked Austin contract saved the team $3 million, capping off a day that took Dallas under the cap by shaving at least $21.5 million in restructures.

Austin’s savings come from converting his base salary to a bonus, making it less of a cap hit, according to Eatman. Roto World pegs Austin as making $6.732 million in 2013. Changing the salary to a bonus allows the Cowboys prorate the money across the remainder of the contract.

Jason Witten also had his contract restructured on Thursday, saving the team $3.5 million. The biggest savings on the day came from reworking cornerback Brandon Carr's deal, which netted $11 million in cap savings.

Before altering current contracts, the Cowboys had one of the worst cap situations in the league. Total commitments had Dallas $18.2 million over, but that problem is in the past for this season. The front office can now breathe easy knowing it now has a little space to work with.
