NFL news roundup: Salary cap set, Cribbs tampering, restructured contracts, Jets QB options and more

The NFL never sleeps. Here’s today’s news from the world of professional football.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Even though we’re in the middle of the offseason, there’s still plenty of news from the NFL to talk about. Here are some of today’s biggest headlines, which include the salary cap being finalized, a Browns wide receiver tampering, the Cowboys restructuring contracts and the Jets weighing their options at quarterback.

The NFL has officially set the salary cap at $123 million, which is a $2.6 million jump from last season. This is good news, not because it will help teams sign any big-name free agents, but it will help team re-sign their restricted free agents as well as their upcoming draft picks.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver and return specialist Joshua Cribbs could be charged with tampering after he admitted on ESPN Radio that his agent has been talking money with other teams around the league, something players aren't allowed to do until later in March.

The Dallas Cowboys, who need help getting under the salary cap, have restructured wide receiver Miles Austin's contract, along with four other players'. Austin's new contract will save the team $3 million in 2013, and the other four helped save the Cowboys a total of $21.5 million.

Weighing their options at quarterback, the New York Jets have worked out David Garrard, who hasn't played in an NFL game since 2010. The Jets have struggled at the quarterback position as Mark Sanchez hasn't played up to expectations and the Tim Tebow experiment could now be considered an epic failure.

Despite rumors, the 49ers made it clear that they are not pursuing a trade that would send disgruntled cornerback Darrelle Revis to San Francisco. The Niners made sense due to the fact that they have so many draft picks that surrendering a couple to the Jets wouldn't make much of a difference.

After 10 seasons in the league, Buffalo Bills defense end Chris Kelsay has announced his retirement from professional football. Kelsay played in 147 games in his career with the Bills and general manager Buddy Nix stated on Thursday that Kelsay has been a "consummate professional throughout his career" and that they will miss him.

More news on the Jets quarterback situation surfaced on Thursday, as the Jets seem interested in pursuing Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn. Quinn may be out of a job in Kansas City as the team has traded for 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. In his time in the league, Quinn hasn't lived up to his first-round selection, as he has played for three different teams and has a career passer rating of 64.4.

Another player has been arrested for driving under the influence as Tennessee Titans tight end Brandon Barden was charged with driving under the influence after being involved in a one-car accident. There were no injuries and the Titans are "gathering information on the incident."

After Arkansas Pine-Bluff tackle Terron Armstead ran a blazing 4.71 40-yard dash at the 2013 NFL Combine, some NFL teams are interested in working the offensive lineman out as a tight end in the school's upcoming pro day. Good tight ends are hard to come by in the NFL, and when good ones are found, like the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski and the Saints' Jimmy Graham, offenses can explode around them.

Finally, here’s the latest post-combine mock draft from the folks over at Mocking the Draft.
