Bernard Pollard injury: Ravens safety played season with cracked ribs

The hard-hitting safety missed just three games this season.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard played most of the 2012 season with six cracked ribs, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

Pollard originally hurt his ribs in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He missed the last three weeks of the regular season, but never revealed his what his exact injury was (via the Baltimore Sun):

“It’s tough dealing with pain,” said Pollard, who led the Ravens with 98 tackles as well as recording two sacks and a forced fumble. “For us as football players, we know we’re going to go through it. At the same time, that’s the name of the game. Six of them, yep. Hey, it’s up to us to go out there and play and we did.”

Pollard, 28, is considered one of the heaviest hitters in the NFL and has a penchant for dealing out injuries himself. His most memorable hit was when he ended New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's season in the first game of 2008.

In his second season in Baltimore, Pollard had a strong year. He had 71 solo tackles and 27 assisted tackles in 13 games. He also had an interception.

Pollard has been in the NFL since 2006. He has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans and the Ravens. His contract with the Ravens runs through 2015.
