Jamaal Brown’s contract with Redskins to expire Friday, per report

The Redskins will let offensive tackle Jamaal Brown head to free agency on Friday.

NFL contracts have weird stipulations, all for the sake of managing salary cap hits from departing players. One of those involves a player's contract expiring five days after the Super Bowl if he is still on the team. That is the case for Redskins right tackle Jamaal Brown this week. He will become a free agent on 4:01 p.m. ET on Friday should Washington resist cutting him before then, according to CSN Washington.

If the Redskins were to cut Brown before his contract expired, then a portion of his salary would count against the cap. No reason for a team to want that, so his contract will be done and over with by the end of the work week.

The 31-year-old Brown has spent his last three seasons with the Redskins, but he didn’t appear in a game in 2012 as he battled injuries. It was the second time in four years that he missed all 16 games, so his future with Washington is uncertain.

Over an eight-year career, Brown has appeared in 85 games, 84 of which were starts. He has yet to play a full season, missing at least one game each year. Brown has missed multiple games in half of his seasons as a professional.
