Super Bowl blackout: Bad equipment caused power outage, Entergy announces

Entergy is looking for a suitable replacement so there’s never another blackout at the Superdome.

A faulty electrical relay device is to blame for the Super Bowl XLVII blackout, according to Entergy New Orleans.

Entergy officials said Friday the device has been removed and a replacement is being evaluated, according to The New Orleans Times-Picayune:

A statement from the company said: "While the relay functioned without issue during a number of high-profile events -- including the New Orleans Bowl, the New Orleans Saints-Carolina Panthers game, and the Sugar Bowl -- during Sunday's game, the relay device triggered, signaling a switch to open when it should not have, causing the partial outage.

It was reported earlier in the week that “faulty equipment” was to blame on the blackout.

The 34-minute blackout came early in the second half of Sunday's Super Bowl matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. Players killed time by stretching and keeping loose. CBS killed time by ... doing nothing.

The blackout came with the Ravens leading 28-6. The Superdome went dark shortly after Ravens kick returner Jacoby Jones returned a kick 108 yards for a touchdown.

After the lights came back on, the 49ers mounted a comeback and nearly tied the game. But the Ravens held on to win Super Bowl XLVII, 34-31, in the final seconds.
