Looking to trim payroll, the Atlanta Falcons released defensive end John Abraham, cornerback Dunta Robinson and running back Michael Turner on Friday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted the news Friday morning, and the team confirmed shortly thereafter, as Atlanta shaves $18.65 million worth of salary cap space with the releases and $21.4 million in cash, a net savings toward the cap of $17.4 million.

The moves come a day after the $123 million NFL salary cap for the 2013 season was announced, as teams now know what they are working against.

All three players, Abraham and Turner in particular, have been mainstays with the Falcons for years as Atlanta made its move to prominence in the NFC. -- Robinson’s three-year tenure with the team is the shortest among the trio.

Turner was a bruising force in the backfield, rushing for more than 1,000 yards in three seasons for the Falcons, scoring at least 10 rushing touchdowns in all five campaigns with the team.

A Falcon since 2006, Abraham recorded double-digit sack totals in four seasons, providing an outside pass rush, sometimes the team's only one. Robinson came over from the Houston Texans in 2010, snagging four interceptions during his time in Atlanta.
